PROMOTING POSITIVE ROLE MODELS TO YOUNG BLACK MALES IN EDUCATION

Our work

1. Financial support for male, African-Caribbean teachers in training

Based in South West London, the Hutchinson Foundation raises money in order to distribute bursaries to teachers of African-Caribbean origin. Bursaries are normally £9,000, paid over three equal instalments. The bursary scheme is administered by Roehampton University which also receives financial assistance. Participating Teacher Training institutions also receive financial assistance for the implementation of the scheme.

The applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • be permanently resident in the UK
  • be registered at Roehampton for a full-time PGCE (or PCE as of 2007)
  • be intending to take up full-time employment as a teacher in a primary or secondary school in an Inner London Borough for at least three years

2. Building awareness around the work of the foundation.

As the work of the Foundation coincides with public policy objectives in central and local government, the Foundation has an increasing role to play in relation to meeting these objectives. The main areas of activity include:

  • Encouraging recipients of foundation bursaries to become not only role models but spokespeople in the wider debate
  • Providing information to public bodies and contributing to conferences
  • Publicising the work of the Foundation within the educational establishment and within the Press

3. Expanding the scope of the foundation beyond South West London.

It is intended, as and when funds permit, to extend the scope of the foundation throughout London and to other inner city areas.
