PROMOTING POSITIVE ROLE MODELS TO YOUNG BLACK MALES IN EDUCATION

Our bursary scheme

In conjunction with teacher training colleges, the Hutchinson Foundation singles out especially promising black male trainee and junior teachers to receive extra financial support and training. The Foundation pays them a bursary of £3,000 p.a. for their first 3 years as a teacher, and arranges private sector-style leadership and management
training courses during the holidays. In addition, academic coaching for the teachers’ pupils and extra coaching for the teachers themselves is provided by the Foundation’s partner organization and fellow education charity, the Windsor Fellowship.

Further, each teacher is tasked annually to set up and organize the formative experience of a 5 day Outward Bound course for 12 deserving pupils, paid for by the Foundation, the aim being to lift their horizons and learn team- building skills. The exercise is intended not only to increase the aspirations, potential and life chances of the pupils, but also for both pupils and teachers to begin the ongoing process of providing positive role models within their schools and in the wider community.

At the end of the three years, the recipient of the bursary will graduate as a Hutchinson Fellow and will be encouraged to maintain contact with the Foundation, to report back on their experience, give encouragement to new trainees and continue their own personal development with the ongoing support of the Foundation.
