Black youth in Britain "disinterested in politics"
In an editorial in May 2007, Black Britain draws parallels between disaffected youths in Britain and Jamaica and their lack of faith in the political system. It points out that a key cause of problems is their experience in the school system.
"Although African Caribbean pupils, boys in particular, are often treated within the education system as if they are of low intelligence, are forced to endure low expectation from their teachers and are disproportionately excluded from schools – they are in fact more astute and perceptive than they are given credit for and can easily recognise a wolf in sheep’s clothing."
We feel that this is most likely to be the case in schools where there are no black male teachers both to serve as role models to the pupils and examples to their fellow teachers.
